Today I wanted to explore further into the idea of buildings
vs. nature and the structures of the two. I tried out some digital collage of
the relationship between nature and buildings. I am inspired by established
mind-sets concerning nature and architecture i.e. that buildings have structure
and that nature doesn’t. I chose to superimpose geometric shapes (white with a
black outline) over photographs I had taken of buildings when travelling in
Europe- one image taken in Croatia of a pink building features trees
surrounding it. I manipulated the image in various ways. I turned the checked
windows of the building into the trunks of trees with the leaves forming the
top. The resulting image explores nature as a structured entity. I established
a palate for the image as part of considering the monotone aspect of the brief.

I produced a similar image from a photograph I had taken in
Poland. In the picture the Krakow main square tower was dwarfing a branch I had
shot in the bottom corner. I wanted to subvert the scales of the image having
the branches grow up the tower matching it in size. The palate for this image
drew from the vivid sky tone of the photo.

I have at last found a book on the invisible structures of
nature/ fractals and will be researching the structures and patterns hidden in
nature in due course.
